Not illustrated. 1903 Excerpt: ...made a special and rather successful effort to meet the enormous demand for pictures, chiefly of Art, Architecture and historical subjects. Our collection has grown to over 8000 numbers; and is largely housed in a case of our own device, which is the admiration of all visiting librarians. This precedent is being logically followed, and considerably expanded, this year. The Board has authorized a judicious collection of photographic postcards, covering subjects in constant demand for reference and study. The first collection will cover California and Western subjects, and other collections will be added as needed. As a supplement of the costly collection of the magnificent large photographs, this collection has the advantage that instead of costing from 25 to 50 cents apiece, 5000 illustrations can be had for about $70; and they can be stored in a $12 card cabinet, instead of a $300 picture cabinet taking up thirty times the space. A further expansion of the Picture Department has been undertaken in the way of stereographic views and sterescopes, under th line of the "Underwood Travel Series," which is now being largely adopted by universities and libraries. Ninety-six stereographs for the Juvenile department, and 334 for the Reference department have been received. A special function (begun last year but then necessarily abandoned ) has this year been entrusted to Mr. Victor Borin. This is a card catalogue of illustrations (portraits, views, customs, costumes, etc.), referring to Western history. No work now extant furnishes such an index; so far as I know, this is the first attempt to make one.
